In short, pattern recognition may be characterized
as automatically computing an interpretation
of sensor data which is appropriate for a given task.
Bioinformatics on the other hand aims at exploiting techniques and
methodes from computer science for biological problems.
Within bioinformatics the Pattern Recognition
and Bioinformatics group concentrates on applying
pattern recognition techniques
to various biological problems.
In the field of molecular biology,
protein docking and analysis of microarray and
mass spectroscopy data are current areas of research.
In ecological bioinformatics, automatic detection of
root systems in minirhizotron images is investigated.
The second area of activities is in computer vision.
Areas of interest are to exploit Gestalt principles
facilitating perceptual grouping of image primitives,
mosaic images,
and to incorporate functional properties of objects
into the process of computer vision.
Further applications include the analysis of amperometic biosensors
to determine analyt concentrations.
